Artist’s Statement

What I am trying to convey is a sense of tapping into what is beyond me as in a general sense of incomprehension and a feeling of presence. Less a matter of a particular agenda than an accumulation of interests, passions.

I’m very interested in the idea of, first mentioned by John Keats, “negative capability” which is the willingness to embrace uncertainty, to live with a sense of not-knowing, humility and a making peace with ambiguity.

Other areas of particular interest are pataphysics (science of imaginary solutions), neuroscience, astrophysics, transnational crime and art history.

In some ways I am looking to portray what things look like to use prior to ordering.

With all the work I’ve been doing I’ve been exploring the idea of perception particularly in terms of how “reality” is ordered by our individual perception and capabilities.

In the last year in particular I feel that I’ve made strides in bringing together for myself more of an understanding of what is involved in what I want to convey. I’ve learned that we initially perceive the world as a wall, in a sense, of visual and auditory information.  We create some sense of order within our own particular capabilities and in relation to our particular experience. So from chaos, so to speak, a sort of personal order and reality is created.

So for me, it feels like a matter of how to bring together an acceptance of the natural unordered state that experience truly is without imposing my own structure too heavily upon it.

So my work in some cases seems unordered, random, “wrong”, overloaded, not clear (some of my assemblages, digital images, music, digital poetry, videos). And in these the idea, again, is what perception is before being ordered.

The Children’s Crusade of 1212 has always been a great source of inspiration for me since I was a child. It has remained a major influence on me.

So all my work, of which I do most at once, feel like they come from the same sources.

Art influences/inspirations

I feel engaged within the history of art ranging from prehistoric to contemporary.

Some of the influences and inspirations I particularly feel an immediacy to are Sally Mann, Roger Ballen, Denis Johnson, Caravaggio, Joseph Bueys, bad art, outsider art, Constable, Ornette Coleman, Moroccan art/design, Howard Hodgkin, Andy Kauffman, Tokyo street fashion, Cedell Davis, Titian, Matthew Barney, Bruce Nauman, J.M.W. Turner, Atget, Renaissance art, imagery derived from Catholicism, Mozart, Arvo Part, Cormac McCarthy, Flannery O’Connor, The Children’s Crusade, Giotto, Neo Rauch and more.
